Routines, Routines, Routines

There is a lot to classroom management but one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself is creating effective and manageable routines.

We had a speaker come to my campus a few weeks ago to talk about Multiple Tiers of Student Support (MTSS).

The main idea behind MTSS is that you can get more bang for your buck by focusing on what causes the behavior and once the behavior occurs to use restorative practices to alter future behavior.  I understand the premise behind MTSS burt I am always a little apprehensive about this approach since it often downplays the use of discipline.  But we will save that discussion for another day.

But during the presentation I had an AHA moment.  I was able to connect what he was saying to what I already do in my classroom.

We did an entire activity where we tried to identify the cause of student behavior and then brainstormed what we could do to alter that behavior in the future.  In other words what triggered that behavior.

I quickly realized the answer to removing many of the triggers in a classroom is creating effective and manageable routines.
