How To Fix Discipline At Your School?

Jan 06, 2024

That is a question we had at my school.

Toward the end of last year some major discipline issues irrupted which resulted in a brawl between 10 students.  It shook us to the core.

We had so many questions, so little answers, and we demanded change.

Our district and administration meet with us several times (4 to be exact) to discuss our concerns and brainstorm ideas for change.

When it was all said and done our district came to us and told us that they have faith in us and entrust that we can find the solutions.  Those words took the wind out of my sails and I felt so deflated.  But after a short period of time we decided that we would be the catalyst of change.

Toward the end of last year we put together a detention program and we carried it and expanded it to this year.  We currently have 24 people involved in the program and changes are happening.

There are a couple of philosophies that are guiding our detention program.

One is take care of the small stuff before they become big things.

The other is the 10 / 80 / 10 Rule.  Our goal is to change the behavior of that 80% to create a better campus.
