How to Create a Welcoming Classroom Environment

How do you create a welcoming classroom environment?  If you are expecting me to say it starts with compassion, understanding, and acceptance you will be disappointed.  No don't get me wrong, those things are important but my in my opinion before you can have you have an inclusive classroom you need to have structure and stability. 

Let me explain.

When I first started teaching my goal was to have a classroom that was exciting and fun and I wanted my students to think of me as one of those cool teachers.  There was very little structure in my classroom which led to instability which led to a chaotic classroom.  Ultimately it resulted in a classroom where students felt uncomfortable because they did not know what to expect. 

It is my belief that students crave predictability and stability because many of them are lacking that at home.  Today my classroom is a very safe and welcome place because students know that they will be safe in my class and they know what to expect.
