Disruptive and Defiant Students

Mar 30, 2024

When I think about what I learned in college while getting my teaching credential I think maybe I took only 1 or 2 classes classroom management.  I thought I was ready for the classroom and my students.

I WAS SO WRONG

I remember the day that I finally came to grips that teaching was going to be harder than I anticipated.

I was probably on my 3rd week of student teaching and I was getting worn out real quick.  First there was the lesson planning.

I had no idea what I was doing.

Then there was the time commitment.

I was still working full time while I was doing my student teaching.  I was burning the candle at both ends and the wick was all gone.

And finally all my hard work and commitment was received by the students as an opportunity to mess around because their normal teacher handed over the reigns to me.

No matter what I did I could not get the students to be quiet.  I would be pouring my heart into the lesson that I spent all night preparing and it was falling on deaf ears.  Worse than that the students were disinterested, disruptive, and defiant.

I finally had it.  I got so mad I yelled at a student and sent him to the office.  It had no effect on the rest of the class but I still remember the words of my Master Teacher, "It is about time".

I have come a long way since then and 20 years later I am glad to say that each day is no longer a struggle.

In my latest video I share how I know handle disruptive and defiant students.
